Quick answer: A desiccant is a packaging component, not an ingredient, so it is normally out of scope for kosher and halal certification of the food itself. Auditors still ask, because the sachet sits inside the pack. The workable answer is a composition and process statement: what the desiccant is made from, whether any animal-derived or ethanol-based material is used anywhere in the process, what allergens are present on the manufacturing site, and whether a functional barrier separates the desiccant from the product. Ask for that statement in writing rather than for a certificate that may not exist for this product class.
This question arrives from two directions. Quality teams get it from a customer questionnaire that was written for ingredients and applied to the whole bill of materials. Sales teams get it from export markets where kosher or halal status is a commercial requirement rather than a regulatory one. Both need the same underlying document.
Why certification bodies rarely cover desiccants
Kosher and halal certification systems are built around ingredients and processing aids that become part of the food. A desiccant sachet is neither. It is inserted into the headspace, it is removed before consumption, and the label instructs the consumer not to eat it. Most certifying bodies will therefore either decline to list it or issue a letter confirming that the component does not require certification in that context.
That letter is often what the customer actually needs, but the request has to be phrased correctly. Asking a certifier to “certify our desiccant kosher” frequently produces a refusal that then reads, to a procurement system, as a failure.
What a composition and process statement should cover
Rather than a certificate, request a signed statement addressing five points.
- Raw material origin. ATMOSIScience fiber desiccant is a fiber-based material. A statement should confirm that no animal-derived material is used in the desiccant core or the wrapper, including in any sizing, coating or adhesive.
- Processing aids. Ethanol and other solvents matter for halal declarations even when they do not survive into the finished article. The statement should say whether any are used and whether residues are detectable.
- Site allergen profile. Not what is in the desiccant, but what else is handled in the same building. This is the question food auditors actually care about, because cross-contact risk is a site question.
- Gluten. A short statement of the material basis and whether any cereal-derived input is used anywhere in the chain.

The manufacturing environment question
Allergen statements are stronger when they are backed by the physical environment. How to phrase it on your own specification
Two phrasings survive scrutiny and one does not.
- Works: “Component is a packaging insert, not an ingredient. Supplier statement on file confirms no animal-derived materials, no ethanol processing aids, and no allergens of concern handled on the manufacturing site.”
- Works: “Certifying body has confirmed in writing that this component does not require kosher certification in this application. Letter reference on file.”
- Does not work: “Kosher and halal certified.” If a certificate does not exist for the component, this creates an unsupported claim that an auditor will find.
The same logic applies to environmental claims. Since 27 September 2026, the EU Empowering Consumers Directive requires environmental claims to be specific and substantiated, which means a vague statement is now a compliance issue as well as an audit finding.
Where this fits in the supplier document pack
Kosher, halal and allergen statements belong in the same folder as the safety data sheet, certificate of analysis, food contact declarations and compostability certificates. Frequently asked questions
Does a desiccant need to appear on the ingredient label?
No. It is not an ingredient. It does need the do-not-eat marking and, in some markets, a disposal instruction.
Will a halal certifier accept a supplier statement instead of a certificate?
In most cases for packaging components, yes, provided the statement is signed, specific to the product code and addresses animal-derived materials and alcohol.
Can the desiccant carry an allergen-free claim?
Better to state the factual position: which allergens are handled on site and which are not. A blanket free-from claim invites verification requests that a packaging component cannot easily satisfy.
Does compostability affect any of this?
No. ASTM D6400 and EN 13432 describe end-of-life behaviour and say nothing about dietary status.
