Mallet percussion gets forgotten in humidity conversations because the bars look indestructible. They are not. Concert marimba bars are carved from Honduras rosewood — one of the most prized tonewoods on earth — and tuned by removing precise amounts of wood from the arch under each bar. That geometry is calibrated to a moisture level. When the room dries out, the bar shrinks and its pitch and resonance drift; dry far enough, fast enough, and a hairline crack appears at the node holes — and a cracked bar is effectively a dead bar. Replacing a single low-register rosewood bar can cost more than an entire student snare drum, and leading marimba makers consistently warn against dry rooms, direct sun and heating vents for exactly this reason.
It is not just the bars
The rails the bars sit on, the frame, and the resonator mounts on many instruments are wood too. When a school hall or practice room swings between seasons, the whole instrument moves: cord tension changes, bars sit differently on their posts, and buzzes appear that get blamed on hardware. Where mallet instruments actually live — and why that is the problem
Marimbas and xylophones spend their lives in band rooms, school halls and academy studios: American band rooms where winter heating drops RH below 25%, Korean and Singaporean academies where air-conditioning runs hard through summer terms, Australian school halls that bake through January. Worse, HVAC usually shuts down on weekends and holidays, so the room swings twice a week. Wood tolerates a slightly imperfect number far better than it tolerates constant swings.

FAQ
Do padauk bars need humidity control too? Yes. Padauk is more affordable and slightly more forgiving than Honduras rosewood, but it is still solid wood tuned by carving — it shrinks, drifts and cracks the same way, just a little more slowly.
My school marimba has synthetic bars. Am I safe? Synthetic bars themselves do not care about humidity, but the wooden rails, frame parts and any rosewood instruments sharing the room still do.
Can I just oil the bars? Surface oil slows moisture exchange slightly but cannot stop it. Oil is cosmetic care; stable 45–55% RH is structural care.
How do I know when to replace the pack? Put an RH indicator card in the case. When it reads outside 45–55% with a pack inside, the pack has done its work — typically about 3 months, sooner in leaky cases.
