Quick answer: Amps don’t need in-case humidification the way a solid-spruce guitar does — but their pine and plywood cabinets, glue joints, tolex adhesive and paper speaker cones all live happiest in the same 40–60% RH room as your guitars, and condensation is their real enemy. Keep the amp room moderate, store rarely-used cabs in covers or flight cases with two-way 49% control, and always let a cold amp warm up before you power it on.
Guitarists who obsess over case humidity often park a 1960s-style tube amp against an outside wall in a damp basement, or in a garage that swings from 20% RH in winter to 80% in summer. The amp is furniture-grade wood plus electronics, so it fails differently than an instrument — more slowly, and usually at the joints, the covering and the speaker. Here is what actually happens, and the honest answer on what (and what not) to do about it.
Why an amp is not a guitar
An acoustic guitar top is a thin solid plate, built at 45–50% RH and stressed by string tension, which is why makers such as Taylor and Martin publish tight humidity guidance for instruments. Most amp cabinets are solid pine or void-free plywood (often birch), glued and screwed into a box, then wrapped in vinyl covering. Plywood’s cross-laminated plies restrain each other, so a cab won’t crack down the middle the way a dry spruce top can. That does not make it immune — it makes the damage sneakier.

The highest-risk single event isn’t a season at all — it’s condensation: hauling a freezing amp from the van into a warm, humid club and switching it straight on. Water films on cold metal and glass, and on high-voltage tube circuits that can mean arcing. Give any cold amp 30–60 minutes to reach room temperature, case open, before power-up — the same acclimation rule we give for instruments left in cars.
The honest recommendation
You do not need to humidify a combo amp that lives in a normal living space. You do need to fix the room if it sits below about 35% or above about 65% for weeks — that range is where coverings peel, joints creak and pots corrode. A hygrometer on the amp shelf settles it in a day. Storage is the exception where packs earn their keep. Do tube amps need a humidifier?
No — never add moisture to an amp. The goal is a stable 40–60% room. Two-way packs in a storage cover or case are for buffering swings in damp or bone-dry storage spaces, not for humidifying electronics.
Can I put a humidity pack inside my amp?
In the case, cover or sleeve, resting against the cabinet — yes. Inside the chassis, on tubes, or in a powered amp — no. Unplug and let the amp cool first.
Does humidity change amp tone?
A moisture-laden paper cone moves differently and speaker manufacturers note damp cones sound duller until they dry; chronically damp cabs can also loosen and buzz. It’s subtler than the effect on acoustic guitars, but it’s real.
My amp lives in the garage — is that OK?
