Step 1: The straightedge check

Lay any true straightedge (a credit card works for short spans) across the lower bout, behind the bridge, and look at the light gap. A slight, even arch is by design — factory tops are typically radiused, not dead flat. What you’re screening for is change and asymmetry: a pronounced hump that rocks the straightedge right behind the bridge, or a hollow that swallows light between the soundhole and the bridge’s front edge.
