Horsehair and Humidity: A Complete Bow Care Guide for String Players

Quick answer: Horsehair is hygroscopic: it shortens in dry air — in extreme cases enough to strain or snap the fragile head of an over-tightened bow — and lengthens in humid air until the bow cannot reach playing tension. FAQ

How tight should a bow be for playing?

Roughly a pencil's width between hair and stick at the narrowest point — the stick should keep a visible curve toward the hair. If reaching that takes the screw to its end in either direction, humidity has moved your hair length.

Can a warped bow be fixed?

Often yes, by careful heat re-cambering — but it is skilled, risky work on a fine stick. Prevention (even hair, loosened storage, stable RH) is enormously cheaper.

Does the 49% pack help carbon-fiber bows?

Why does my bow feel different in winter?
