Mold in the Case: How to Clean an Instrument Safely — and Keep Mold from Coming Back

Quick answer: Mold appears when case humidity sits above roughly 65% RH for days — museum conservators treat 65% as the never-exceed line. Why mold picked your case

The safe clean-up procedure

Step 1 — work outside or by an open window, ideally wearing a mask; disturbing mold releases spores.

Step 2 — dry removal first. Lift the loose growth with a soft, dry brush or a vacuum with a brush head, working away from the soundhole so debris does not fall inside.

Step 3 — wipe hard gloss finishes only. On modern gloss polyurethane or polyester guitar finishes, wipe with a microfiber cloth barely dampened with water and a drop of mild soap, then dry immediately with a second cloth. Work in small sections; liquid must never linger.

Step 4 — know when to stop. Violin-family varnish, French polish, matte and vintage nitrocellulose finishes are easily damaged: no alcohol, no solvents, no polishes. Dry-brush only, and take persistent growth to a luthier — the finish is worth more than the shortcut.

Step 5 — rescue the case. Vacuum every seam, wipe hard surfaces, and let the open case dry in direct sun for a day or two; UV and dryness kill active growth. A badly infested lining that still smells after drying should be replaced — spores in plush re-seed the instrument.

FAQ

Can I use vinegar or bleach on the instrument?

No. Both can damage finishes, and vinegar's acidity attacks some lacquers. Reserve them (diluted, carefully) for hard case shells only — never the instrument, never the plush.

Does sunlight really help?

Yes — for the case. UV plus dry air kills active surface growth in the lining. Keep the instrument itself out of direct sun; heat and UV damage finishes and dry wood too fast.

How do I get the musty smell out?

After sun-drying, leave an odor absorber (plain baking soda in an open jar) in the closed empty case for a few days, then air it out. If the smell returns, spores survived — re-clean or replace the lining.
