Quick answer: No tonewood is crack-proof below 40% RH. Dense ebony and rosewood parts usually complain first, thin spruce and cedar tops fail most expensively, and mahogany is the most forgiving of the common woods. Whatever is on your spec sheet, the target is the same: 45–55% RH in the case, held automatically by a two-way Humidi-Cure® 49% pack.
Guitar shoppers agonize over tonewoods for sound, then ask a very reasonable follow-up: does koa crack more than rosewood? Is a maple-bodied guitar safer in a dry apartment? The honest answer is a ranking with an asterisk, because crack risk is only partly about the species.
What actually decides crack risk
Three things set how nervous a piece of wood should make you. First, movement: every species shrinks and swells a different amount as its moisture content follows the air, the mechanism our equilibrium moisture content explainer walks through. Second, geometry: a thin, wide plate moves a lot in absolute terms, and quartersawn wood moves less across its width than flatsawn. Third, restraint: tops and backs are glued to rigid rims and braces, so when the wood wants to shrink and cannot, it builds tension until something gives. Finish slows the exchange but never stops it.
That is why the scariest combination is not the densest wood. It is a thin, braced, solid plate spanning the widest part of the body.

Treat the ranking as a field guide, not a verdict. It reflects movement classes and what luthiers see on the bench, and individual boards vary: a quartersawn rosewood back can outlast a flatsawn mahogany one that was built wet.

Why thin tops are still the expensive failure
An ebony board with sharp fret ends is an annoyance a setup can fix. A split spruce top is structural surgery: cleats, splints, finish touch-up, and a bill our repair cost breakdown puts well into the hundreds. The top also happens to be the part doing the singing, which is why makers ship guitars built at 45–50% RH and ask you to keep them near it. One number for every wood list
Here is the useful part: you do not need a different plan per species. The 45–52% sweet spot covers ebony, koa, spruce and everything else on the spec sheet, and 49% sits right in the middle of it. Is koa riskier than rosewood?
They sit in the same high tier for different reasons: koa moves more with RH swings, rosewood is more brittle once dry. Both reward a stable case far more than the average mahogany build does.
Does finish protect the wood?
Finish slows moisture exchange, which buys you hours in a bad room, not weeks. It also cracks under the same stress, which is often your first visible warning.
My fingerboard feels sharp at the edges. Is that a crack risk?
Sharp fret ends mean the board has already shrunk. It is the cheapest warning you will ever get: rehydrate at 49% before the top, which moves more slowly, follows the board.
Can a cracked top be saved?
Almost always, and best when repaired promptly by a luthier. Stabilize the humidity first or the repair reopens with the next dry season.
