Quick answer: Solid-wood guitars need humidity control, full stop — a solid spruce top can shed about 1/8 inch of width between 47% and 30% RH and crack. Laminate bodies, built from cross-grain plies, are far more crack-resistant — but every 'laminate' guitar still has a solid neck, a solid fingerboard, glued braces and a glued bridge, all of which move with moisture. Solid and solid-top guitars: keep the case at 45–55% RH with a two-way pack. All-laminate guitars: one pack per case is cheap insurance against fret sprout, setup drift and glue fatigue.
It is one of the first questions beginners ask — usually right after a salesperson says 'don't worry, it's laminate.' Is the worry-free laminate guitar a myth or real? The honest answer sits in the middle, and knowing which parts of your guitar are which wood tells you exactly how much care it needs.
What laminate actually is
A laminate (also sold as 'layered wood') plate is three or more thin veneers glued with alternating grain directions. Wood barely moves along the grain; it moves a lot across it. Cross the plies and each layer restrains its neighbours — the same trick that makes plywood dimensionally stable. That is why laminate backs and sides survive humidity swings that would split solid sets, and why travel and student guitars lean on the construction.
What laminate does not fix
Walk down the rest of the instrument. The neck is solid maple, mahogany or nato. The fingerboard is solid rosewood, ebony or laurel — and when it dries and shrinks around its metal frets, you get the same sharp fret ends a $5,000 dreadnought gets. The bridge is solid hardwood glued to the top; braces are solid spruce glued underneath it. Truss rods, glue lines and finish all ride on wood that still exchanges moisture with the air. Laminate owners rarely see cracks; they regularly see buzzing, action drift, fret sprout and, after years of cycling, lifting bridges. That is also why makers of layered-wood guitars still publish the same 45–55% RH care guidance as everyone else.

The beginner trap: 'it was cheap, so I stored it anywhere'
Ironically, laminate-heavy student guitars often live in the harshest spots — unheated bedrooms, cars, garages (see our worst storage places guide). FAQ
Can a laminate guitar crack?
Rarely from humidity alone — the plies restrain each other. Laminate failures are usually delamination (plies separating) after extreme heat or soaking, or glue-joint failures. Both are still moisture stories.
Is a solid top worth the extra care?
Sonically, usually yes — a solid top matures and projects better. Just budget the care in: the top that vibrates freely is the part most eager to crack at 30% RH.
How do I know what my guitar is?
Look at the soundhole rim: solid tops show the same grain lines continuing down the edge; laminates show layer lines like plywood. Spec sheets say 'solid' explicitly — wording like 'select spruce' without 'solid' usually means laminate.
