Why Your Strings Rust So Fast: Humidity, Sweat and the Case You Store Them In

Coated strings: worth it?

Coated strings wrap the wound strings in polymer, blocking sweat and air — they genuinely last longer and cost more. But coatings wear at contact points, plain trebles are usually uncoated anyway, and no coating protects your frets, saddles or tuners. Are my rusty strings dangerous to play?

Genuinely corroded strings are weaker (they snap) and rough (they chew fingertips and fret crowns). If you can feel grit under your fingers, change them — and fix the environment so the new set lasts.

Does a humidity pack rust strings?
