Upright & Double Bass Humidity: Stopping Cracks and Open Seams

Quick answer: The double bass has the largest solid-wood plates of any string instrument, so dry air does more absolute damage to it than to anything else in the section. Carved and hybrid basses crack and pop seams when heated indoor air falls into the 20s; laminated basses tolerate far more. Bass players get the worst of both worlds: an instrument too big for a sealed hardshell case, and plates so wide that even a small percentage of wood shrinkage adds up to millimetres of movement. Why the biggest instrument suffers most

Wood shrinks across the grain as it dries. A spruce guitar top loses about 1/8 inch of width falling from 47% to 30% RH; scale that same movement across a bass top more than twice as wide and the numbers get frightening. Bass specialists such as Gollihur Music describe the winter sequence plainly: indoor humidity drops like a rock, moisture leaches out of the wood, the top and back shrink, and pressure builds across the whole structure. The glued seams are actually designed to be the weak point — traditional hide glue lets a seam open with a pop to relieve stress before the plate itself splits. An open seam is an inexpensive luthier repair; a top crack is not.

Dosing a bass cover: the honest math

A padded bass bag is not a sealed guitar case — it's a huge volume with zips and seams that trade air with the room. That leakiness is the number-one variable in pack life, so plan around it. Winter and touring realities

A bass stored on a stand in a heated room is naked to the driest air of the year — if that's your setup, run a room humidifier and keep a hygrometer at f-hole height. FAQ

A seam just opened. Can I glue it myself?

No — take it to a luthier. Seams are closed with hide glue precisely so they can be opened and re-closed cleanly; wood glue from a hardware store turns a cheap repair into an expensive one. And fix the air first, or the seam will simply open again.

My bass is laminated. Can I skip humidity control entirely?

You can skip the panic, not the care. Fingerboards still shrink and their edges still sharpen, necks still move, and extreme dryness isn't kind to any glue joint. One or two packs in the cover is cheap insurance.

Do in-bass tube humidifiers work?

Water-tube devices that hang in the f-hole are one-way and need constant refilling, and they drip if over-filled. They can help in emergencies, but a two-way pack system plus room control is steadier and maintenance-free — the comparison lives in packets vs sponges vs gel.

What humidity number should I actually chase?
