Piano Humidity Control: Uprights, Grands and the 45–55% Room

What humidity does to a piano

The soundboard is a large, crowned wooden panel under tension. When the room gets humid, the soundboard swells and its crown rises, pushing the bridge harder into the strings and raising the pitch — and, at the extreme, risking compression damage and buzzing. When the room dries out, the soundboard shrinks and flattens, the pitch drops, and past its limit the board can crack and glue joints and the pinblock can loosen — the classic dry-home problems of a piano that won’t hold a tuning and develops soundboard cracks. The room-first routine every piano needs

Measure, then hold 45–55%. Put a hygrometer near (not on) the piano. Add a room humidifier for dry heating-season homes, a dehumidifier for damp rooms and humid climates. Major makers cite acceptable ranges from about 35–70% but most identify roughly 42–45% as optimal for tuning stability and longevity — and all of them stress that stability beats chasing an exact number.

Placement is half the battle. Keep the piano off exterior walls, away from heat vents, radiators, fireplaces and direct sun, and out of a room that swings hard (many uprights suffer against a cold outside wall). For grands, avoid a spot under a skylight or beside a vent.

Seasonal and climate notes

Heating-season homes get very dry — a piano’s worst enemy — so a room humidifier plus a hygrometer is the winter priority (the physics is in the heating-season plan). Can I just put humidity packs inside my piano?

Is 49% RH bad for a piano?
