Paulownia: a soundboard that breathes fast
The soundboards of the guzheng, gayageum and many guqin are paulownia — wutong in Chinese, odong-namu in Korean. Modern guzheng makers largely use Paulownia elongata from Henan province, while older and premium instruments favour Paulownia fortunei; Chaozhou-style zhengs sometimes use Chinese fir instead (documentation from specialist builders and the Guzheng Alive project). Paulownia is prized because it is extraordinarily light and resonant — but light means porous, and porous means fast moisture exchange. Add the fact that these soundboards are often thin and only lightly finished on the inner surfaces, and you get an instrument that tracks the room's humidity in days, where dense Western hardwood might take weeks.
A lacquered guqin is partially buffered by its thick lacquer skin — but lacquer slows moisture, it doesn't stop it, and the fine crack patterns (duanwen) that collectors prize on antique qin are a record of centuries of movement. The erhu's skin: a weather instrument
The erhu's python-skin head behaves like every stretched natural membrane: in humid air it slackens and the tone goes dull and unfocused; in dry air it tightens, brightens — and, at the extreme, risks splitting or pulling at the rim. Players know the frustration of an instrument that sounds different every day of monsoon season. You cannot (and should not) re-tension a skin daily; what you can do is stop the air around it from swinging. A case held at 49% RH gives the skin one climate instead of seven per week.

Practical setup for zheng-family instruments
Large zithers rarely have airtight cases — most live in padded bags or on stands. Prioritise like this: keep the instrument bagged or covered when not played; place two Humidi-Cure® 49% packs inside the bag near (never on) the soundboard for a guzheng or gayageum, one for a guqin case; add an RH indicator card where you can see it. FAQ
My guzheng's tone went dull in monsoon season. Is it damaged?

Can I tighten an erhu skin that slackened in humidity?
Resist daily adjustments. Move the qianjin or bridge slightly for the session if you must, but let stable case humidity do the real work — skin re-tensioning is a job for a maker.
Does lacquer on a guqin make humidity packs unnecessary?
No. Lacquer slows exchange dramatically but the wood core still follows the seasons, and the un-lacquered interior surfaces breathe freely. Stable case RH remains the foundation.
