Why Clarinets and Oboes Crack: Bore Humidity Science and Prevention

Quick answer: Wooden clarinets and oboes crack because of a moisture gradient, not bad luck: warm, saturated breath swells the bore from the inside while dry room air shrinks the outside. Yamaha's care guidance is blunt — moisture left in the pipe may cause cracks, so swab after every session, let the instrument warm to room temperature before playing in winter, and break a new instrument in slowly. Grenadilla (African blackwood) is one of the densest tonewoods in use, and that density is exactly why wooden clarinets, oboes and English horns crack. Dense wood exchanges moisture slowly — so when conditions change fast, the inside and outside of a joint end up at different moisture levels, pulling against each other until something lets go, usually along the top joint or through a tone hole. The bore gradient: why cracks happen in winter

Every practice session pumps breath at body temperature and near-100% humidity down a bore that may have been sitting in a 25%-RH heated room. The bore's inner surface absorbs moisture and swells; the outer surface, still in dry air, doesn't move — or is actively shrinking. The stress concentrates around tone holes and thin walls, and it's worst when the instrument is also cold: Yamaha warns that in winter you should wait until the entire instrument has adjusted to room temperature before playing, because rapid warming of a cold, dry instrument invites both sticking keys and pipe cracks. New instruments, whose wood is still settling, are the most vulnerable — most cracks happen in an instrument's first year or two of service.

The maker-backed prevention routine

Swab every time. Yamaha's guidance is to thoroughly dry the inside of the pipe after playing, using a swab, and notes a rod swab is particularly effective around tone holes, where water pools and wicks into end grain.

Acclimate before you play. Carried a clarinet through a winter street? Let the case sit closed until it reaches room temperature. Ten minutes of patience is cheaper than a pinned crack.

Break new instruments in gradually. Yamaha recommends keeping playing to around 20–30 minutes per day for the first two weeks of a new instrument's life, building up slowly so the bore adjusts in small steps rather than one soaking.

Stabilise the case air. Swabbing removes standing moisture but the wood still lives in whatever air surrounds it 22 hours a day. FAQ

My clarinet already has a small crack. Is it ruined?

Usually not. Repair techs stabilise cracks by pinning or banding, and many repaired instruments play beautifully for decades. But a crack is a one-way event — prevention costs a few dollars, repair costs a lot more, which is the same trade discussed in humidity vs temperature.

Should I oil the bore?

Makers and techs disagree on frequency, so follow the guidance for your specific instrument. What nobody disputes is moisture management: swab after playing and keep the case air stable. Do the uncontroversial things first.

Is a humidity pack safe right next to pads and keys?
